so that there is no potentially irritating soap residue left on
them.
At nail trim time, carefully examine your dog’s
paw for foreign bodies between the toes or tears in the pads.
Gentle removal of irritants and cleansing of small cuts early
on will prevent further problems.
Dogs that live and are walked in extreme climates,
such as snow and ice, blistering sand, or sharp rocky terrain
should be outfitted with their own pair of booties to keep their
feet safe.
Dry
Pads
Your
dog’s feet secrete sweat that lubricates his pads to keep
the friction of walking from drying them out, as well as providing
a scent to his foot prints which other dogs can enjoy later on!
If your dog does a lot of walking on rough surfaces
such as asphalt or sand, his pads may need a little extra moisture
from time to time. Applying a natural balm to keep them moist
may prevent cracking down the line. Apply the balm before bed
time so it will not get all licked off, and will get absorbed
into the skin overnight.
Chronically cracked or very dry pads may also
be the result of nutritional deficit or disease, so be sure to
check with your vet if you constantly see cracking, or if a crack
becomes irritated.
Itchy
Pads
If
your dog chews his pads, and you do not notice any injury or foreign
objects in his feet, evaluate his environment for culprits such
as floor or carpet cleaners, even sprays used in the yard, to
rule out chemical irritation. If the irritation persists, take
your pal to his friendly vet at once!
